Early Life
Chandana Deepti was born in 1983 in Warangal, a culturally rich city in Telangana known for its 13th-century Kakatiya dynasty heritage. She was raised in Hyderabad, the state capital, where she grew up in a supportive, education-oriented household.

During her B.Tech years at IIT Delhi, Chandana made a decisive choice: rather than pursuing a career in technology, the path taken by virtually all of her peers, she decided to appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Her initial ambition was to join the Indian Foreign Service, but she later set her sights firmly on the Indian Police Service. In 2012, she cleared the UPSC examination with an All India Rank of 551 out of 840 selected candidates, joining the 65th Regular Recruit (RR) batch of IPS officers. She trained at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Vijayanagaram, Telangana.
Career
Chandana Deepti began her IPS career in September 2013 with an early posting as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in Nizamabad, gaining hands-on experience in administrative and operational policing. Her most celebrated posting came when she was appointed Superintendent of Police (SP) of Medak district in Telangana, a tenure that would establish her national reputation as one of India’s most innovative police officers.
In Medak, she introduced the #AskMedakSP initiative, a groundbreaking real-time social media engagement system through which citizens could directly report concerns, lodge complaints, and receive responses from the SP’s office. This technology-driven community policing model was unprecedented at the district level in India and attracted national media attention, including coverage by The Times of India in 2019.
During a delayed monsoon season, she wrote an 11-line Telugu poem capturing the anxious anticipation of farmers waiting for rain, a gesture of emotional literacy toward her community that went viral and earned her the enduring nickname “Poetess in Uniform.” She launched campaigns against impulsive crimes, citing data that 26% of prisoners had acted out of momentary anger, and ran public awareness drives encouraging emotional resilience with the message: “Smile and move on.” Under her leadership, Medak saw a measurable decline in impulsive crimes.
In December 2021, she was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), North Zone, Hyderabad — one of the most operationally demanding postings in Telangana. She subsequently served as SP Railways, Hyderabad, focused on railway security, chain snatching operations, and community safety in transit environments. She was also posted as Chief of District Police, Nalgonda. In 2024–2025, she moved to the Future City Police Commissionerate, Hyderabad as a DIG/Joint CP.
Personal Life
Chandana Deepti married Balaram Reddy, a Hyderabad-based businessman and relative of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, on October 18, 2019. The wedding at Taj Krishna, Hyderabad was attended by both Telangana CM K. Chandrashekar Rao and AP CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, a reflection of the high regard in which she is held across both Telugu-speaking states. She is a vegetarian, a food enthusiast, and a devoted pet lover, frequently sharing her affection for her dog Leia on social media. Her hobbies include Bharatanatyam, poetry writing, and travel.
