Early Life
M Ravi grew up with an unusual passion for detective fiction and law enforcement. Even as a Class VIII student, he would scribble “M. Ravi, IPS” in his school notebooks , a childhood dream that would take nearly two decades of setbacks and perseverance to actually realize. A voracious reader of detective novels, he developed a fascination with criminal investigation and justice that never left him.
He was also actively involved in sports from a young age, including baseball, badminton, and horse riding. In 1972, during his school years, he received training in BKS Iyengar yoga , a practice that would anchor his legendary fitness discipline throughout his entire career.
Education
Dr. Ravi graduated with distinction from the Agricultural College in Madurai in the early 1980s , an institution that is part of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University system. His academic excellence earned him a prestigious fellowship from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), which provided a grant of ₹5,000 per annum and a monthly stipend of ₹800 , remarkably, more than the basic salary of an IAS officer at that time, which stood at ₹700 per month.
He later pursued postgraduate studies before being recruited as a Probationary Officer at Syndicate Bank in Thiruvananthapuram, and subsequently transferred to Delhi. It was during this banking career , while financially comfortable , that the childhood dream of becoming an IPS officer began to reassert itself powerfully.
His journey toward the IPS was extraordinary in its difficulty. In 1987, he reached the final interview stage of the UPSC Civil Services Examination but scored only 110 out of 250 in the interview, pulling him back. By this time he had already reached the then-age limit of 26 years. The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission DSP route was also closed to him as it was restricted to Arts and Science graduates , he was technically overqualified as a professional degree holder. Just when he considered taking his case to court, the UPSC raised the age limit to 28 years , but Ravi was already 28 years and 1 month. He missed it by a single month. Then, in 1990, Prime Minister V.P. Singh raised the age limit to 36 years. Ravi seized the opportunity, competed among 3.5 lakh candidates, and cleared the examination in his last attempt. He joined the 1991 batch of IPS, fulfilling a dream he had carried for over two decades.
Career
Dr. M Ravi served as Superintendent of Police in four districts over seven and a half years, with a landmark achievement in each posting. As SP Nagapattinam, he cracked the sensational parcel bomb case. In Villupuram , a district notorious for violent caste clashes between Vanniyars and Dalits , he worked to maintain peace and communal harmony. As SP Railways, he dismantled the feared “Biscuit Bandits” gang that operated on trains, arresting its West Bengal-based kingpin Tapas Mandal.
An official visit to Singapore under the UNDP Programme inspired him to introduce model police stations across Tamil Nadu, and he pioneered the enrollment of 40,000 police volunteers in his jurisdiction. He introduced what he famously called the “Airhostess Approach” to policing , shifting from sentry-style reception to a welcoming, service-oriented public interface at police stations, including the use of decoy complainants to test whether citizens were being treated respectfully. His postings as Deputy Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, Inspector General, and finally Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for the Special Task Force, Erode and later for crimes against women and children marked a career defined by action-oriented leadership.
As a father of two daughters, his work on crimes against women and children carried a deeply personal dimension. He has spoken passionately about how fatherhood reinforced his professional resolve to protect women and fight domestic violence , understanding that empathy for women’s experiences must be cultivated across society, not just in law enforcement.
Personal Life
Dr. Ravi is an extraordinarily disciplined individual by any standard. He pumps weights at the gym five days a week , a ritual of many years that is the source of his famous six-pack abs, which he has maintained well into his senior career years. He plays badminton at least three times a week and has led Tamil Nadu’s IPS officers’ team to consistent victories at All India tournaments. He is a passionate cook , a hobby he listed on his UPSC form , and has been working on a book titled “Stay Fit, One Life”. His reading discipline continues to this day: he grew up on detective novels and historical Tamil fiction like Ponniyin Selvan and Sivagamiyin Sabatham, and books remain central to his identity.
